Laylatul Qadr in Ramadan

Laylatul Qadr is a special night that is repeated every Hijri year in the holy month of Ramadan during which the quantities of angels descend to the lowest heaven, Allah responds to dua, and in which the first verses of the great Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

What is Laylatul Qadr?

The Arabic term “Laylatul Qadr” consists of two words: “laylah” which means “night”, and “qadr” which means destiny or value of something.

Laylatul Qadr is otherwise known in English as the Night of Destiny, Night of Value, the Night of Power, and the Night of Decree. Laylatul Qadr is called that because:

  1. It is estimated that what will happen in that year. For the Almighty’s saying: “On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained” (Al-Dukhan: 4)
  2. It was said: It was named for the greatness of its value with Allah.
  3. It was said: For the earth’s distress from the angels that descend in it.
  4. It said: Because there is a destiny for obedience in it.

Laylatul Qadr occurs in the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan. Laylat Al Qadr first started when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on it.

When is Laylatul Qadr?

According to sound Islamic teachings of the Islamic schools of Law (Madhhib al-Fiqh), the exact date of Laylatul Qadr is unknown, but it is believed to fall on one of the odd-numbered nights during the last ten days of Ramadan.

The demand for the night of destiny is welcomed on all nights of Ramadan, on the last 10 confirmed, and on the nights of tension confirmed; the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Search for Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”

(al-Bukhari).

So one should treat each of the last ten nights of Ramadan as if it is Laylatul Qadr.

What time does Laylatul Qadr start and end?

The night starts with the call to prayer in Maghrib and ends with the dawn but many scholars believe that the reward for Laylatul-Qadr is obtained for those who prayed the evening and dawn prayers in the congregation.

What are The Signs of Laylatul Qadr?

  1. It’s a Peaceful and very calm night: Allah says in the Quran: It is all peace until the break of dawn. (Qadr:5) So we’re looking for a night that is, very peaceful.
  2. In the Last Odd Nights: The night is in the last ten nights on the odd nights: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th of Ramadan.
  3. It might be a rainy night: There are narrations where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did mention that he dreamed about Laylatul-Qadr and in that dream, he had prostrated and when he came up, his face was wet with rain water and mud.(al-Bukhari)
  4. No rays in The Sunrise for the Next Morning: Narrations say that it is going to be a sun with no rays. So that means it’s a very weak sun, you can look straight at it.

What to do on Laylatul Qadr?

Some of the things Muslims should do during that night:

  • Recite the Quran because the Quran was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH).
  • Make Istighfar, asking for forgiveness from Allah. Because it is a night better than a thousand months, imagine if you’re asking for forgiveness for 83 years straight continuously!
  • Offering extra rakahs of prayers.
  • Making plenty of dua and there is a specific dua that was taught

Frequent dua, dhikr, glorification, prayer, and asking Allah Almighty for freedom from the fire, and seeking refuge from it. So Dua is answered, and diligence in it is desirable

Being keen to break the fast of a fasting person, either by inviting him, sending him food to break his fast, or paying money to break his fast, as it was narrated on the authority of the Prophet (PBUH) that he said:

“Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

What are the Benefits of Laylatul Qadr?

  1. In Laylatul Qadr, the sin is forgiven for the one who stands up for it in anticipation of reward with Allah Almighty. Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins.” (al-Bukhari)
  2. On Laylat al-Qadr, God Almighty revealed the Noble Qur’an.
  3. Allah Almighty singled out Laylatul Qadr for blessing, the Almighty said: “Indeed, we sent it down during a blessed night.” (Ad-Dukhān:3)
  4. Ages and livelihoods for the next year are written in it. The Almighty said: Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments.” (Ad-Dukhān:4)
  5. God distinguished worship in it without the rest of the nights. The Almighty said: “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Qadr:3)
  6. The angels descend on Laylatul Qadr to pamper the Muslims and fill the earth with goodness, mercy, and forgiveness. The Almighty said: “The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.” (Qadr:4)
  7. Laylatul Qadr is free from evil, and obedience and good abound in it, as it is peace from all harm. The Almighty said: “Peace is until the rising of the dawn.” (Qadr:5)

Importance of Laylatul Qadr

Hence, we are aware that this night is superior to a thousand months. What exactly does that mean?

  • This implies that whatever act of worship you perform that evening counts as if you had been performing it for a thousand months. For instance, if you offer dua that night, it will be as if you offered the supplication for a thousand months!
  • This is the reason why many Muslims attempt to find this night by staying up very late during the final 10 nights of Ramadan to receive such a prize.
